Daily driving an M3 has put me on the wrong side of the law. I lack the self control to operate such a machine on a daily basis. So today I went and looked at a few options for a new daily driver.

First, I tried the Chevy SS, which was very good. Then I went to the Cadillac dealership to try a CTS. The salesman didn't know what a V-sport was, didn't know if I could get the 3.6 in RWD, didn't know if the 3.6 in the new CTS is the same as the 3.6 in the old CTS, and didn't know how much power the 3.6 made. Then it was off to the Ford dealership, where this happened:

Me: Do you have any Taurus SHOs?

Salesman: Any what?

Me: Taurus SHO... S-H-O

Salesman: (blank stare... turns around and gestures to F-150 immediately behind him) This is the closest thing we have...

I sat there and stared at this jackass, unable to get a word in edgewise, for an uncomfortably long time while he tried to sell me an F-150. Finally, I interrupted and demanded to see every Taurus he had on the lot. None of them were SHOs, so I left.

Kind of makes you wonder what the requirements are to get hired as a car salesman.

I've had to deal with a few people like that. Usually I just say nevermind and walk away.

I went to a Chevy dealer to check out the Volt once (just for kicks) and the guy started trying to sell me on how bad Chevy is now and that they need to bring back the Woody.

I was like, "Umm... I'm not the audience." He then said the Volt sucked and left me and my wife to our own devices.

I wasn't going to buy a Volt, mind you, but jeez... at least TRY to sell them.

I also had a Toyota/Scion dealer tell me that the FR-S doesn't come in a manual. Sigh.

Also, why not just get a 335/328i?

That's pretty much what happened. The Caddy guy, I just had him open a CTS for me then studiously ignored him while I looked it over. The Ford guy I just asked him to point me to the Tauruses, checked for SHOs, and said something to the effect of 'I'm good, bye."

Lol. That's funny. I actually quite like the Volt.

I'm just not in to anything BMW is doing right now. They don't have the same feel as the older ones. The 335 is nice, but it feels laggy. I could do an M5, but I'd rather have the SS for half the price.

Hey, c'mon, be nice. They do have to have a pulse and at least three neurons to rub together.

Yep. I remember I was talking to a guy at my local Chevy dealer a while ago about the ZL1 (before it was released). He had no idea what I was talking about. None. He literally said "Son, the SS is the fastest Camaro Chevy makes and ever will make." I just looked at him, snort-laughed, and walked away to my car. I don't think he liked me. Luckily the same dealer made up for it a few months ago when the new Impala came out. The person I talked to knew a ton about it, and every other car there. He even gave me the keys to the ZL1 that was in the showroom (take that, other salesman, it does exist) and told me to start it because it needed starting so the battery wouldn't die. I did. Hoo boy

Oh, I think the Volt is really cool from a tech perspective. I'm a fan of the idea of it, and I might consider one once I have a garage to plug it in. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some anti-electric type.

I actually really like my F30 328i (well, my wife's.) I think it's fun, but then again I never had an E90 or earlier, so I'm not benchmarking. :-P

The SS is cool, but good luck getting Chevy to actually sell it to you!

Nope. No pulse requirement.

Also, the less brain activity the better. Then they can parrot everything the sales/GM says for them to say, and check in frequently since they can't think for themselves.

I had a Ford salesman do almost the same thing to me. I asked if they had any GT500s on the lot, he said "No, but I just sold this really awesome Raptor you would have liked!"

To witch I responded "No, I already own a truck, I am looking for a GT500, the Mustang..."

Which was followed up by "I have a used Raptor thats available"

I then too did the blank stare as there were no words.

Then I left.

"Daily driving an M3 has put me on the wrong side of the law. "

Umm, the stupid may not be all on the other side.

That said, sometimes tickets are just plain bad luck. My M3 was one of the fastest production cars I ever owned. No tickets. One warning.

For some reason, driving slower cars I did get tickets. The Z3 for instance.

A warning (verbal) last night on the way home because I (WRX) passed a soccer mom before the two lanes went to a single lane because I did not want to watch her talk on her cellphone for the next four miles . Officer did not see that, he saw me pass her in the right lane though.

Sigh.

I had a Subaru sales manager ( Screw You Russell Subaru in Ellicott City, Md .) tell me that WRX hatchbacks were rare cars. Oh, and I (53) could not drive one because they didn't want someone to hurt the motor before it got sold.

I went a few blocks north and paid cash for a WRX I was allowed to drive. Idiots.

Sounds about right. They'll just say anything because most people that wander in off the streets won't know what is and isn't accurate.

The wrong side of the law thing isn't the M3's fault. It's my fault. Every time I grab the wheel I just want to drive the shit out of it, and I don't do a great job of resisting the temptation. I have a theory that this is why everyone thinks M3 drivers are douches. We're not, we're just normal people under the spell of that glorious straight six. I need something that won't light the flame in my belly every time I start it up.

True. It gets very bad when you are A) in a great mood B) on your favorite road and C) some insanely good tune is blasting.

Not gonna lie, some days if I didn't hit 100 on this one big long sweeper that merges onto 95, I was sad. The car would jump up there so effortlessly. Like a real literbike, it doesn't tell you you are going fast. It just does it. So you can look down and go "HOLY SHIT" when you see where your foot took you.

As for the Z, I needed a lawyer and a judge who had a very different interpretation of "reckless driving" than the officer who cited me at 1 am on a Monday morning at 105 on a very very quiet stretch of route 32. There were only three cars there, mine and two HoCo cops.

M3 is a good call if you have more self control than I do. Although I would recommend a minty e46 for half the money over any of the V8 models.

The SS is a very impressive machine though. Super tame and easy to drive until you free the beast. Also, I've found myself missing that extra set of doors since I started driving the M3.
